The land mullet (Bellatorias major) is the largest skink in the world. Now uncommon in subtropical forests and forest edges of eastern Australia. This fella was picked up by one of our camera traps at Girralong Rainforest Retreat.

Girralong Rainforest Retreat protects important areas of old growth eucalypt forest with large hollow trees. This is important habitat for possums and gliders such as the Yellow Bellied Glider, Petaurus australis. They chew distinctive V-shaped notches in eucalypt tree trunks to feed on sap.
We have a resident population of wompoo fruit doves, but their numbers swell as rainforest trees start to fruit. Sometimes up to a dozen pairs can be seen in this Morton Bay Fig, along with white-headed pigeons, top knot pigeons and brown cuckoo doves. So far we have recorded over 100 bird species at Girralong Rainforest Retreat.
We were excited to record this family of Parma Wallaby at Girralong Rainforest Retreat - a 200 acre conservation property comprised of sub-tropical rainforest and wet-and-dry eucalypt forest. The Parma Wallaby is a rare species restricted to the coast and ranges of central and northern NSW. Major threats to their conservation include predation by foxes and feral cats, loss and fragmentation of habitat through land-clearing for timber and grazing. |
